HomeKit ‘Incompatible’ with some of their Competitor’s Products

Apple’s HomeKit is designed to help you easily control all the devices in your home. However, products developed for the ZigBee or Z-Wave protocols cannot be controlled through HomeKit. This situation is about to change according to Apple, although with some limitations still in place.

An automated home can make a house comfortable as well as functional. One of the latest developments in the home automation market is Apple’s HomeKit. Long term Apple fans have been eagerly waiting for announcements on this project, though this latest one might have left them feeling a little disappointed.

At the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference 2014 (WWDC), Apple mentioned the creation of a “bridge” allowing the connection of non-Apple products to HomeKit. It wasn’t until later that everyone found out which products will be allowed to connect to HomeKit, and how. The process comes with both good and bad news, but consumers and manufacturers alike will have some positives to take away from the message.

Only new and certified products will be allowed to connect to HomeKit

The “bridge” mentioned earlier is represented by the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections of the products you want to control, combined with the Siri app. Additionally, homeowners must also possess an Apple TV to be able to control their home gadgets while being away. Furthermore, some items can be controlled through a bridge, while others cannot.

This restriction seems to complicate matters for somebody who wants to involve Apple’s latest offerings in their fully automated home. Apple argue that they have taken these steps to minimise security risks by not allowing access to devices that could be dangerous – such as smart locks that grant physical access to the home. Light bulbs, on the other hand, don’t pose security risks and therefore can be controlled through HomeKit.

Connecting to HomeKit sounds complicated

A typical user may not be aware of the fact that all manufacturers must pass through a complex process before releasing devices that can be controlled through HomeKit. Companies that wish to work with Apple must first obtain a MFi license. It is quite clear that without this certification the product won’t qualify for support and control through HomeKit. Additionally, previously released items simply won’t be able to connect to this control system.

You will be able to connect up to 100 devices

One of the best features Apple brings is the possibility of allowing its “bridge” to connect to other “bridges” designed by competitors. This move sounds complicated at first, but it can only be good news in the future for home automation enthusiasts. The prospect of having up to 100 gadgets connected and controlled at the same time through a single control system allows for the possibility of truly innovative design.
